The introductory material Fr. Seraphim Rose authored for that book is incredibly interesting, comprehensive and relevant. The last part of the 150 pages of introductory material is called "Orthodox Monasticism in Today in Light of Orthodox Monastic Gaul" and was Rose's attempt to explain why the experience of the desert strugglers in medieval Gaul is so relevant to new Orthodox today in America and the West generally, particularly monastics.

He saw many parallels between the early Gaulish Christians and those of today, similar challenges and struggles, similar temptations, and many lessons that could help us avoid pitfalls and wrong turns. He also saw the experience of Gaul as a timely reminder to us in the West that the Orthodox monastic experience is very much a part of Western European culture.

St. Herman of Alaska Press may be working on a new edition of this work. I hope it does come out before too long, as Rose's message in it is very timely, important and relevant for the struggler's in American and the West, and this book is currently not easy to find.

I was looking for a quote literally an hour ago about how the lives of the saints are more important than theology and education, and here this article comes. Miraculous.
